In 1948 John Cage said: Beethoven was in error, and his influence, which has been as extensive as it is lamentable, has been deadening to the art of music". Beethoven's Cage is a concert and a movie. Composed and created in 2012, both of them were made using sounds of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and images of its performance, especially on the hands of a director of orchestra. M is the title of a book by John Cage with texts between 1967 and 1972. It is an amazing book. There it is a poem: Song summer squashes saw a fish hawk when I hear this Here, M is a composition, not a movie, created exclusively with the sounds of that fragment from John Cage's Song. James Joyce, who also lived in Zurich, Switzerland, planned to make a short book about the ocean to follow Finnegans Wake. John worked on what would his last work: Ocean, which was never concluded. Ocean2 was composed in 2012 and it also includes a movie, with the same title. Ocean2 was made in the exact latitude of New York City, but in the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in Europe, more precisely in the Portuguese coast. The sounds were exclusively worked on Atlantic Ocean's sounds. Beethoven's Cage, M and Ocean2 can be performed together or not. They can be performed or be just an installation. The three works were made to celebrate John Cage's one hundred years! The world première of the three concerts and two movies, in simultaneous, will happen at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation, in New York City, in March 29, 2012. Emanuel Pimenta, 2012 |
